Lhalung Monastery, also known as Sarkhang and Golden Temple, is an ancient monastery situated in the Lhalung Village of the Spiti Valley, in Himachal Pradesh, India. Lhalung literally translates to 'land of the gods', and the village is one of the earliest habitats of the Spiti region. The monastery is tucked at an elevation of about 3,658 meters above sea level. It is said to have been founded by Rinchen Zangpo in the late 10th century and holds significant historical value. The monastery features several shrines and has a vast collection of Buddhist artefacts, murals, and scriptures. The gompa is adorned with vibrant thangkas and houses an array of idols - the most notable being a statue of the three Buddhas. The architecture showcases the inherent culture of the region with complex woodwork and carvings, which echo the Tibetan style. Surrounded by mountains and located in the serene Spiti Valley, Lhalung Monastery offers tranquility and a deep spiritual experience.
