Key Monastery (Ki Monastery) Tourism

Key Monastery, also known as Ki or Kye Monastery, is one of the main cultural and religious centres in Spiti Valley, situated at an altitude of about 4,166 meters above sea level in Himachal Pradesh, India. This Tibetan Buddhist monastery is over 1000 years old, making it an important repository of Buddhist teachings and culture. It is perched atop a hill, providing an awe-inspiring view of the Spiti River and its vast arid valley that resembles the Tibetan highlands. The architecture of the monastery is distinctive and picturesque, resembling a fortress with temples constructed in a stacked box-and-balloon design, reflecting the pasada style. Its walls house ancient murals, thangkas (Tibetan scroll paintings), valuable manuscripts, and wind instruments that echo through the valley during ceremonies. The monastery is famous for its ancient Buddhist scrolls and books and its collection of musical instruments and robes. Key Monastery functions as a religious training centre for Lamas. It also hosts the annual Chaam Festival, featuring masked dances and ritual performances, attracting many tourists and devotees.
