Dhankar Monastery, perched on a cliff at an elevation of over 3,800 meters, is a historic and cultural gem situated in the otherworldly landscape of Spiti Valley in Himachal Pradesh, India. The monastery, which has stood for nearly a thousand years, offers a profound connection with Tibetan Buddhism. It used to serve as a fortress and residence for the royal family of Spiti and now is a repository of ancient scriptures and Buddhist paintings. It is a complex of multiple buildings serving as a monastic institution for the Gelug sect and houses a revered collection of thangkas and Buddhist statues. The architecture is an amalgamation of Tibetan cultural influence and the rugged simplicity necessitated by the remote mountain environment. Dhankar's secluded location and the serenity of its surroundings contribute to the spiritual and peaceful aura that envelops it. The monastery offers breathtaking views of the Spiti River and the surrounding stark and hauntingly beautiful landscape. Dhankar also lays claim to a small, serene lake located a short hike from the monastery, known as Dhankar Lake, providing visitors with a sense of tranquility and a connection to nature.
