Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica (Kochi (Cochin)) History

Welcome to Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, Kochi (Cochin), Kerala, India

The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica located in Fort Kochi, in the city of Kochi, Kerala, serves as a significant landmark representing the colonial history of India. This impressive structure stands as a testament to the Portuguese influence in the region and has been a beacon of Christian faith for over five centuries. Let's delve into the history of tourism surrounding this magnificent edifice and the latest trends in visiting this heritage site.

History of Tourism at Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica

The origins of the Basilica date back to 1505 when the first Portuguese Viceroy, Francisco de Almeida, received permission from the Kochi Raja to build a church. The original structure was elevated to the status of a cathedral by Pope Paul IV in 1558. However, it was demolished when the Dutch captured Kochi in 1663 and then later rebuilt by the British. The present structure, which is the second cathedral built on the same site, was consecrated in 1905 and eventually proclaimed a Basilica by Pope John Paul II in 1984.

Tourism began to flourish in the region with the promotion of Kerala's backwaters, traditional arts, spices, and the relaxed tropical atmosphere. As Fort Kochi developed into a prime tourist destination, visitors naturally gravitated toward the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica, both because of its architectural grandeur and its historical significance as one of the eight Basilicas in India.

Current Trends in Tourism

In recent years, there has been a focus on sustainable and responsible tourism in Kerala. Visitors are more conscious about the impact they have on the local environment and community. The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica has benefited from this, with tours often highlighting not just the Basilica itself, but also the cultural and historical narratives of the region. The Basilica's Gothic-style architecture and elaborate paintings attract a diverse array of visitors, ranging from art aficionados to spiritual seekers.

The government, as well as the local institutions, have also begun to promote heritage walks, which typically include the Basilica as a pivotal point of interest. These walks encourage tourists to appreciate the amalgamation of various cultures and architectural styles present in Kochi, as well as understand the historical context of landmarks like the Basilica.

Another trend is the incorporation of festivals and events within the tourist experience. The Feast of the Holy Cross, celebrated in September, and the annual feast of the installation of the Cathedral that takes place in April, see a steep rise in visitors, both domestic and international, who flock to the Basilica to experience the cultural vibrancy of these festivals.

Furthermore, in the age of digital connectivity, online platforms and social media campaigns have made it easier than ever for potential tourists to discover the wonders of the Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica. Stunning photographs and immersive video content have played a significant role in inspiring travelers to include this sight in their itineraries.
