Sartanji Choro (Porbandar) History

The Historical Significance of Sartanji Choro, Porbandar

Porbandar, a coastal city in the Indian state of Gujarat, has long been revered not only as the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi but also for its rich cultural heritage and architecture. Among the notable structures that exemplify Porbandar's historical significance is Sartanji Choro, a testament to the region's artistic and architectural prowess.

Origins and History

The origins of Sartanji Choro can be traced back to the 18th century, constructed by Thakur Sartanji, a noble belonging to the Jethwa dynasty. Thakurs were known to be the feudal lords and rulers of their respective regions during that period. Sartanji Choro, also known as Sartanji's Chhatri (cenotaph), was built in honor of Thakur Sartanji's son.

The chhatri stands as a beautiful example of the blend of regional architectural styles with a touch of the Rajput flair, often found in the chhatris of Rajasthan. The intricate carvings in yellow sandstone, which are a signature of the chhatris, speak volumes about the skilled artisans of that era.

Tourism and Preservation

Tourism in Porbandar and around Sartanji Choro started gaining traction with the growth of interest in Indian history and heritage. The structure not only attracts historians and architecture enthusiasts but also travelers from around the world who seek to experience India's diverse cultural tapestry.

In recent years, the Government of Gujarat and various heritage preservation bodies have put in efforts to maintain and restore such historical sites. The maintenance of Sartanji Choro has ensured that it remains a significant stop for those exploring Gujarat's cultural landmarks.
