Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary: A Rising Star in India's Tourism Tapestry

A Brief History of Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary

The Thane Creek Flamingo Sanctuary, situated on the northwestern fringes of the bustling city of Mumbai, Maharashtra, has emerged as a vital haven for flamingos and other migratory birds. Historically, the area where the sanctuary now stands was not a designed tourist attraction but rather a natural ecosystem hosting thousands of flamingos every year.

Recognizing the ecological significance and the potential for wildlife tourism, the Government of Maharashtra officially declared the northern part of Thane Creek as a Flamingo Sanctuary in 2015. Spanning an area of about 1,690 hectares, it was designated to protect the mangrove habitat and the flourishing bird life, especially the flamingos that arrive from as far as Siberia and the Rann of Kutch in Gujarat.
