Ana Sagar Lake is a historic reservoir in the heart of Ajmer, Rajasthan, India. Its history dates back to the 12th century when it was constructed by Anaji Chauhan, the grandfather of Prithvi Raj Chauhan, as a means to provide relief to the citizens during times of drought. Over the centuries, the lake has played a pivotal role in the socio-economic development of Ajmer.

Historic Significance

The lake, spread over an area of 13 kilometers, was further beautified during the Mughal era. Emperor Jahangir added the Daulat Bagh Gardens near the lake and Emperor Shah Jahan built five pavilions, known as the Baradari, between 1628 and 1637 CE that enhanced its charm. These additions not only increased the lake's aesthetic value but also turned it into a recreational site for the emperors and their courts when they visited Ajmer.

The British period saw the lake being utilized as a key spot for leisure and entertainment. Post-independence, the lake has been consistently developed with the aim of boosting tourism.
