Jaisalmer, often referred to as 'The Golden City,' is a remarkable place in the heart of the Thar Desert in Rajasthan, India. Known for its iconic Jaisalmer Fort, which rises like a mirage from the golden sands, the city was founded by the Rajput ruler Maharawal Jaisal Singh in 1156 AD. The fort, made from yellow sandstone, glows in the sunlight, lending the city its golden hue. Jaisalmer is also famous for its beautiful Havelis (mansions), elaborately carved with breathtaking patterns, designed by wealthy merchants of the past. The city's narrow lanes are filled with an air of antiquity and mysticism. Attractions like Patwon-ki-Haveli, Salim Singh-ki-Haveli, and Nathmal-ki-Haveli are noteworthy for their intricate architecture. Moreover, the Gadisar Lake and the desert culture of Sam Sand Dunes, where camel safaris are a tremendous attraction, adds to its charm. Another significant feature is the annual Desert Festival, which showcases local culture, arts, and traditions.
