Ashrafi Mahal, located in Mandu, Madhya Pradesh, India, is a historical monument that exemplifies the architectural brilliance of the medieval Islamic era. Constructed as a madrasa, or Islamic academic institution, by sultan Mahmud Khilji, who ruled Mandu from 1436 to 1469, it later developed as an enormous victory tower, portraying the Sultan's achievements. Over time, the complex deteriorated and now stands in ruins, yet its majestic stance continues to awe visitors. The design follows a simplistic Islamic aesthetic with grand arches and a dominant square structure. Originally conceived to be higher than the Qutub Minar, the tower could not be completed due to the sultan's death. The Ashrafi Mahal juxtaposes the nearby Jama Masjid, reflecting the intricate socio-cultural fabric woven during the sultanate period. Earthquakes and natural wear have impacted the structure, but conservation efforts protect its heritage value. The site provides an immersive experience for history enthusiasts, allowing them to stroll among the ruins and contemplate the glories of the past.

Tiring but beautiful
It was constructed so that the queens of Mahmud Khalji can lose weight and so the stairs towards the top are arduous to climb onto. There is a beautiful garden at the top as well.
