Jami Masjid Mandu Tourism
Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 1 - 2 hours
Jami Masjid in Mandu, Madhya Pradesh, India, is a splendid example of Afghan architecture, nestled in the Vindhya Range at an elevation of about 2,000 feet above sea level. Inspired by the great mosque of Damascus, this grand mosque is part of the group of monuments at Mandu, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site candidate. Built by Hoshang Shah in the 15th century, it showcases a refined elegance that highlights the architectural prowess of that era. The masjid is made primarily of red sandstone, with large domes and an imposing courtyard that can accommodate a large number of worshippers. It is adorned with intricate jali work – carved stone lattices – allowing subdued light to filter into the prayer hall. The mosque provides an insight into the secular history and blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles that is characteristic of many Indian monuments.
