Askot Wildlife Sanctuary is a notable protected area in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand, India, known for its rich biodiversity and picturesque landscapes. Established in the year 1986, the sanctuary spans over an area of approximately 600 square kilometers. It provides a natural habitat to a plethora of wildlife species including the Snow leopard, Himalayan black bears, Musk deer, and numerous others, alongside a wide variety of flora. Due to its elevation ranging from 541 to 6,387 meters above sea level, it offers varied terrain, from lush valleys to rugged mountains. The sanctuary derives its name from the famous Askot village, which is known for its historical Askot Musk Deer Sanctuary, once the private hunting grounds of the Rajas of Askot. Situated near the Indo-Nepal border, the sanctuary also plays a crucial role in conservation efforts and forms part of the Peace Parks concept for trans-boundary wildlife conservation efforts between India and Nepal. Visitors to Askot Wildlife Sanctuary are treated to not just wildlife viewing but also spectacular views of the Panchchuli and other Himalayan peaks.
