The complex is famed for its Great Stupa, commissioned by Emperor Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century BCE. When one enters the Sanchi Complex, one sees the Buddhist Vihara to the left. This has been constructed by the Sri Lankan Government. This can be visited first before walking towards the main Stupas.
