The Great Stupa at Sanchi is one of the most important Buddhist monuments reflecting gemstones of Buddhist art and architecture. Located at Sanchi Town, Madhya Pradesh, India, this UNESCO World Heritage site's nucleus was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. It was crowned by the chatra, a parasol-like structure symbolizing high rank, which was intended to honor and shelter the relics. The original construction of the stupa was commissioned by the emperor Ashoka the Great in the 3rd century BCE. Its nucleus was a simple hemispherical brick structure built over the relics of the Buddha. It was later embellished with four ornamental gateways facing the cardinal directions, which carved with scenes from the life of Buddha and his previous incarnations as Bodhisattvas described in Jataka tales. The stupa sits atop a hill and is surrounded by lush gardens, which contribute to the serene ambience of the site. This monument is not only a significant symbol of Buddhist art and architecture but also an important place for pilgrimage for Buddhists from around the world.
