Charaideo Maidams Tourism

Charaideo Maidams, located near Sivasagar in Assam, is known for its collection of ancient burial mounds of Ahom royalty and nobility. The site, considered sacred, reflects the rich history and culture of the Ahom dynasty that ruled Assam for nearly 600 years. The term 'Maidam' refers to a tomb, and the Charaideo site represents the first capital of the Ahom kingdom, established by the dynasty's founder, Sukaphaa, in 1228 AD. The burial vaults at Charaideo are comparable with the Egyptian Pyramids because of their archaeological and historical significance. These mounds are built with bricks and stones and are covered with earthen mounds. Although there were originally over 150 maidams, only about 30 are protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, and they are now considered to be of national importance. Surrounded by lush greenery and undulating terrain, the site facilitates a peep into Assamese history offering education alongside a serene landscape. It stands as a reminder of the traditional customs involving the process of burial, which includes the practice of entombing precious belongings with the dead.
