Type of destination: Historic Temple
Ideal visit duration: 1-3 hours
Closed in: Open all year round
The Sivadol (Shivadol) stands tall in the heart of Sivasagar, Assam, India, embodying the rich cultural heritage of the Ahom kingdom. Built in 1734 by Bar Raja Ambika, wife of Ahom king Swargadeo Siba Singha, it is one of the most revered Shiva temples in India. The structure is a remarkable example of the architectural prowess of the Ahom dynasty, featuring intricate carvings and designs, predominantly in the 'Nilachal' type temple structure. The central temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the tallest among the group of structures within the complex, with a height of about 32 meters. The temple’s golden dome and spire, which are said to be made of gold, gleam under the sun, serving as a beacon for devotees and tourists alike. The Sivadol stands on the bank of the Sivasagar tank, also known as Borpukhuri tank, which was constructed by digging the earth to build the Garhgaon palace, thus reflecting a symbiotic relationship between practical resource management and spiritual endeavors of the bygone era.
