Rang Ghar, located in Sivasagar, Assam, is a historic structure dating back to the Ahom dynasty. Built between 1744-1751, it is one of the earliest pavilions of its kind in the Indian subcontinent. This two-storied building once served as the royal sports-pavilion where Ahom kings and nobles watched traditional games like buffalo fights and other sports at the Rupahi Pathar specially during Rangali Bihu festival. The oval-shaped pavilion is a testament to the architectural finesse of the Ahom period, with its indigenous design elements such as the sloping roofs resembling an upturned boat and carved columns. The structure is made of brick and an indigenous type of cement called surki, which has remarkable binding properties. Visitors to Rang Ghar will not only get a glimpse of Assam's historical grandeur but also its cultural ethos that has stood the test of time. The monument stands proudly amidst the scenic beauty of Assam, offering a picturesque sight against the backdrop of the vast skies and lush greenery typical of this North-Eastern state.
