Chorao Island is situated along the Mandovi River near the northern Goan coast, India. It's the largest among the several islands dotting the river. This picturesque island is a sanctuary of serenity away from the bustling beaches of Goa. Known for its verdant environment, Chorao Island is home to the renowned Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, named after the eminent Indian ornithologist. The island's mangrove swamps provide perfect breeding grounds for a variety of local and migratory birds, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. The island's history dates back to the 16th century when it was a significant cultural hub under Portuguese colonization. Amidst its tranquil environment, one can discover old-world Portuguese architecture, traditional Goan homes, and small village communities engaged in farming and fishing. Traveling around the island, visitors can see rice paddy fields, churches, temples, and unique bio-diversity that contribute to the island's charm. Chorao's relative seclusion and untapped natural beauty offer a distinctive experience compared to the more crowded tourist spots in Goa.

what a great tour
we had a wonderful tour of Chorao Island with our guide, Joshua, from Soul Traveling. We saw some very interesting things...but maybe my favorite was the tasting of versions of Fenni.

Uday (birdman)-5 stars! However, the amount of litter is worrying
We did a tour with Uday yesterday. His knowledge and passion for the local area was excellent- we would really recommend a tour with him, even though he is a bit pricier than the government boat tours..

Pristine Nature
It's situated barely couple of kilometres from the capital city of Goa, Panaji and Mandovi river divides it from the mainland. Public transport is bit of an issue if one wants to visit the nearby May..
