Devalia Safari Park (Sasan Gir) History

Devalia Safari Park, Sasan Gir, Gujarat, India

Devalia Safari Park, also known as Gir Interpretation Zone, is a part of the renowned Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat, India - the only abode of the Asiatic lions. The park was established to offer visitors a quicker, more cost-effective, and assured opportunity to observe the Asiatic lion, alongside a variety of other wildlife species.

History of Tourism at Devalia Safari Park

The history of tourism in Sasan Gir has been closely linked to the conservation efforts of the Asiatic lion. Over the years, Gir National Park, which encompasses the Devalia Safari Zone, has grown in prominence as a significant wildlife sanctuary and a haven for bio-diversity. The establishment of the Devalia Safari Park was a strategic endeavour to reduce the tourism pressure on the main part of Gir Forest.

In 1975, Gir Forest was declared a wildlife sanctuary and efforts to protect and conserve the Asiatic lions were intensified. Tourism gradually evolved, with the spread of awareness about the conservation of these magnificent creatures. As interest grew, the need for a specific zone where tourists could observe wildlife without causing too much disturbance to their natural habitat became apparent, and thus Devalia Safari Park was conceptualized and created.

Visitor Experience

At Devalia Safari Park, tourists can embark on a safari within a fenced-off compound that houses a good number of lions, leopards, deer, antelopes, and other mammals, along with a variety of bird species. This controlled environment provides a quick and guaranteed sighting experience, especially beneficial for those who are short on time yet eager to get a glimpse of the Asiatic lion. The park offers both bus and private jeep safaris, presenting a more predictable and managed wildlife viewing experience compared to the larger, more unpredictable expanses of the main Gir Forest.

Commitment to Conservation

The primary aim of Devalia Safari Park is to aid in the conservation of the Asiatic lion by reducing the tourist load on the main sanctuary. The tourism earnings from the park are instrumental in funding conservation programs and local community initiatives that promote wildlife protection and eco-friendliness.

Latest Tourism Trends

In recent years, an uptick in eco-tourism and sustainable travel practices has been observed globally, and Devalia Safari Park is no stranger to these trends. Visitors are increasingly interested in responsible tourism that supports conservation while minimizing ecological footprints. The park aligns with this trend by offering educational tours and promoting awareness of wildlife conservation among tourists.

Moreover, there's a growing preference for immersive and experiential travel. People are seeking more than just sightings; they want to learn about the local ecosystems, the challenges faced by wildlife, and the conservation efforts that are in place to tackle these issues. Devalia Safari Park, as part of the greater Gir Forest experience, provides such educational insights to its visitors.

Today, Devalia Safari Park continues to be a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts, nature lovers, and adventure travelers, contributing significantly to the overall tourism appeal of Gujarat. The park serves as an excellent model of how controlled tourism can contribute to conservation efforts while providing visitors with unforgettable encounters with some of India's most iconic wildlife.
