Fort William is a massive fortification in Kolkata, West Bengal, India, named after King William III of England. Situated on the eastern banks of the Hooghly River, the fort was originally constructed by the British East India Company in 1696. The current structure, however, was built between 1757 and 1781 after the original was destroyed during the Siege of Calcutta by Siraj ud-Daulah, the Nawab of Bengal. The fort is constructed in an irregular octagonal shape with walls that span over a mile in length and feature six gates. These gates include the Plassey, Chowringhee, Water, St. Georges, and the Treasury Gates. Fort William is a piece of colonial architectural marvel, with lush green spaces and a well-maintained complex that includes numerous buildings, such as the church of St. Peter. Today, Fort William is the property of the Indian Army and houses the Eastern Command headquarters. It serves more as a military garrison than a historic monument, which means access to the public is restricted.
