Birla Planetarium in Kolkata, West Bengal, also known as M.P. Birla Planetarium, is one of the largest planetariums in Asia and the first of its kind in India. Situated at the heart of Kolkata near the Victoria Memorial, this dome-shaped structure is an architectural beauty, mirroring the Buddhistic Stupa style. Inaugurated on 2nd July 1963 by the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the planetarium provides an enthralling experience into the world of astronomy. It has an excellent infrastructure that includes an electronics laboratory for design and fabrication of scientific equipment, an astronomy gallery that showcases a large collection of paintings and celestial models, and an astronomical observatory equipped with a Celestron C-14 Telescope. The planetarium's central dome is where mesmerizing sky shows in various languages are conducted, elucidating various facets of celestial science and astrology. The Birla Planetarium also conducts frequent workshops and observation camps that are both educationally beneficial and fascinating.
