The Botanical Gardens Kolkata, formally known as Acharya Jagadish Chandra Bose Indian Botanic Garden, is situeated in Shibpur, Howrah near Kolkata. Spread over a massive 109 hectares, this garden is home to over 12,000 living plant species, ranging from orchids to palms, bamboos, and even a staggering 250-year-old Banyan tree which is considered one of the largest in the world. The gardens were founded in 1787 by Colonel Robert Kyd, an army officer of the British East India Company, primarily for the cultivation of commercial plants. It has since evolved into a sanctuary for botany enthusiasts, conservationists, and tourists alike, featuring a variety of themed sections such as the cactus house, palm collection, and riverfront.
