History of Gayatri Temple Pushkar

The Gayatri Temple in Pushkar is dedicated to Goddess Gayatri, who is considered the personification of all knowledge according to Hindu mythology. While Pushkar is more famously known for its Brahma Temple, one of the few in the world, the Gayatri Temple holds its own significance. The history of this temple, which sits atop a hill, is not well documented, but local folklore suggests it was constructed some 500 years ago. Pilgrims often trek up the hill to offer their prayers and enjoy panoramic views of the holy Pushkar Lake.

Importance in Hinduism

The temple is dedicated to the second consort of Lord Brahma, who according to Hindu scriptures, did a penance for hundreds of years to purify herself and regain her position as Brahma's wife. Therefore, the Gayatri Temple is a symbol of purity and penance in Hinduism. Thousands of tourists and devotees visit this temple during the famous annual Pushkar Fair to seek blessings and partake in the cultural and spiritual festivities.

The small desert town started gaining traction internationally due to the Pushkar Fair or Pushkar Camel Fair, which is primarily a livestock fair turned into a major tourist attraction. The fair has played a crucial role in putting Pushkar on the global tourism map and has significantly contributed to the growth of tourism in the area.

Visitors to Pushkar can also explore numerous ghats, temples, and participate in the cultural and spiritual activities spread around the sacred Pushkar Lake, which is considered a holy site.
