Golghar or 'round house' is a historical granary located in Patna, the capital city of Bihar, India. It was built by Captain John Garstin for the British army in 1786 after the devastating famine of 1770, as a measure to prevent scarcity of food. The structure is an impressive example of the architectural prowess of the time, with a height of approximately 29 meters and a base width of about 3.6 meters. The beehive-shaped granary has a spiral staircase winding around it which leads to the top. From the top of the Golghar, visitors can enjoy a panoramic view of the city and the Ganges river. The granary has never been filled to its maximum capacity and now serves as a prime tourist attraction. The walls are approximately 3.6 meters thick at the base, making it a solid structure. Although Golghar was used as a granary for some time, its doors open inwards, and therefore, if filled to its full capacity, the doors would not open.
