St. John in the Wilderness is a quaint Anglican church located near Dharamshala, which is in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Nestled amid the deodar forest, this neo-Gothic stone church was constructed in 1852 dedicated to John the Baptist. This serene and historical place is set against the backdrop of the majestic Himalayas, offering a tranquil retreat. The church is renowned for its Belgian stained-glass windows donated by Lady Elgin (Mary Louisa Lambton), wife of Lord Elgin. The churchyard is the final resting place for Lord Elgin, who served as a Governor-General of the Presidency of Fort William (British India). An epitaph on his grave bears his name and tenure details. St. John in the Wilderness stands as a remnant of the colonial past and is a testament to the British architecture of that period. Its Gothic elements and the historic graveyard make it a popular spot for visitors seeking peace or interested in history and architecture.
