Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary, located near Kozhikode in Kerala, is a haven for birdwatchers and nature lovers. This sanctuary spreads over a cluster of islands where the Kadalundi River flows into the Arabian Sea. Encompassing an area of roughly 3 square kilometers, it is home to over a hundred species of native birds and about 60 species of migratory birds that flock here seasonally. The vibrant ecosystem of the sanctuary is marked by lush greenery and brackish water bodies. Mangrove forests comprising several species of the mangrove family form the dominant vegetation, serving as a nurturing ground for fishes and crabs, thus sustaining the avian population. The estuarine environment creates an excellent topography for various birds to roost and feed. It is not only a hotspot for ornithologists but also a remarkable place for tourists to witness the beauty of the wetlands and the diversity of avian fauna. Elevated platforms are available for bird watching, offering tourists a panoramic view of the river mouth and the sea.
