Type of destination: Historical Landmark
Ideal visit duration: 1 - 2 hours
Mishkal Mosque is a historic mosque located in the coastal city of Kozhikode (Calicut) in Kerala, India. It is one of the oldest mosques in the city and exemplifies the rich cultural heritage and architectural excellence of the region. Built by the rich Arab merchant, Nakhooda Mishkal in the 14th century, this four-story structure is made predominantly of wood and laterite, featuring an impressive facade with intricate carvings and geometric designs. Unlike many other mosques, Mishkal Mosque does not have minarets and domes, reflecting a unique blend of Arab and Kerala architectural styles. The mosque was partially burned down by the Portuguese in 1510, but the local community restored it, leaving some charred wooden planks as reminders of the event. Its name is derived from its founder, and over the centuries, it has stood as a symbol of unity and harmony, welcoming people from all walks of life to witness its beauty and tranquility.

Beautiful Architecture
It is one of the oldest mosques in Calicut. It is situated in a very crowded market place, which closes at 5pm. So choose to go around that time.

Ancient but not worth-seeing
The local villagers told me that the mosque had stood there for some 600 years but I did not find anything special about it to mark it as a tourist spot.
