A unique place to see innumerable species of birds in their natural habitat !!!
We were at Jamnagar for a halt and tour, and people knowing about the sanctuary had suggested that do visit the same. And the good part is since we were at The Fern, which is already on the outskirts, the sanctuary was a mere 10 minutes drive from the hotel. The sanctuary has two paths one is 3.5 kms, where you need to go walking only, and the second is around 8 kms but the same can be covered by a car. Though the path which can be covered by car is entirely made up of stones and thus is not at all a good path for driving. We thus chose the 3.5 kms path. Though please note the ticket booking center is at one part, and the actual entry to the sanctuary is a further 300 meters from the booking center. We covered around 2 kms of the path, but the sanctuary does live up to its name. We got to see the varieties and species of birds, which is never possible to see in daily life. We saw it all inside the sanctuary, from storks to pheasants to even wild boars. We even saw the grey and white pelicans and something known as a grey francolin. It was a mesmerizing experience to see and experience the birds in their natural habitats. All in all, I suggest visiting the sanctuary. And if you are a bird lover, take a DSLR with a Zoom lens when visiting, and you will get to capture and witness a magical world of birds. Exceptional Experience !!!

A unique ecosystem - home to a variety of birds
The Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary exceeded all my expectations. With fresh water on one side and salt panes on the other, the unique ecosystem is home to a wide set of birds. The Sanctuary is divided into two zones, Zone 1 has a watchtower, and you can walk to it. Zone 2 has a watchtower, but you can take the car here. We reached around 4 in the afternoon and were only able to see Zone 2. Decided on Zone 2 since the setting sun was behind it and allowed us to see more clearly. The birds sighted included lesser and greater flamingoes, dalmatian pelicans, pelicans, cranes, painted storks, darters and a solitary black-necked stork. The sanctuary is a haven to the very rare to spot black-necked stork, and we felt lucky to have spotted it. Apart from these, we saw many coots, grebes, plovers, cormorants, gulls and raptors like harriers and kites. We also spotted a jungle cat. A few things to take note of, carry a pair of binoculars to view the birds, there is no food available in the immediate vicinity - so be prepared for that. Also, strongly recommend a local guide - Anil Makwana ( 7043853422). He knows the lay of the land and the birds quite well. Having him with us while we were at the Sanctuary really helped us identify and spot birds. He has limited English knowledge, but speaks Hindi and Gujarati with ease.

From Jamnagar side, there was no mention of Khijadiya, rather Khimrana was written, which confused us. When we asked a tea vendor, he led us to the correct inroad. On going on that inroad, a few meters away, there was a little sign board (with dark background) with mention of Khijadiya in small font size. Tourism department should have large sign boards on the highway itself. When we reached at tickets counter at 1 pm, they made us wait outside till 2 pm for tickets. After all the pains, bird watching experience at part 2 of the sanctuary was fantastic. We're yet to visit part 1 .

khijadiya bird sanctuary
Khijadiya bird sanctuary is famous for the rare species black necked stork, and come to this sanctuary for this attraction only, enquired that black necked stork arrived and visible in zone one, near second watch tower area, but despite of two days search we are able to find one juvenile black necked stork only, We travel from Ahmedabad and selected hotel van vihar tree resort which is nearest to the sanctuary (12 km, 20 mins), entry per person to sanctuary is 40 Rs, camera charge 200 Rs, vehicle charge 400 Rs (for zone 2), in case you pay for vehicle up to 4 person entry will be free, Khizadiya divided in to two zones, Zone one is the major zone, car entry is not allowed, to watch bird by walking only, two watch tower are there almost 2 and 4km away from entry gate, here sea water mangrove and forest like environment crates a natural habitat for birds, perfect place for bird watching, this a wide zone and difficult to cover in a single day. Zone 2 is 1km far from zone 1, car is allowed, one watch tower at the end of this zone, here birds are a bit far, need binocular to watch them properly, spend two morning with some remarkable catch of crested serpent eagle, greater crested greb, marsh harrier, montagu’s harrier, bunting, sand plover, etc, but the record catch is juvenile black necked stork.

Bird calling
Wonderful place for bird lovers. Mr Sanjay Makwana (6354233903) is a very knowledgeable guide for the same.Early morning time..6.00a.m to 9.00a.m is best for viewing and photography. In evening time, photos are not clear due to sun and its reflection in water.
