Khilanmarg is a small valley located about 6 kilometers away from the main Gulmarg town in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is a popular tourist destination known for its panoramic views of the surrounding mountains covered with wildflowers during spring and summer. It is a part of the Baramulla district in Kashmir Valley.
Khilanmarg can be reached by a short up-hill trek from Gulmarg which takes around 2-3 hours, or by riding the Gulmarg Gondola, the second-highest cable car ride in the world. The gondola takes visitors from Gulmarg to the intermediate station at Kongdori, from where one can trek or take pony rides to reach Khilanmarg.
The best time to visit Khilanmarg is from May to September when the weather is pleasant, and the valley is blooming with a variety of flowers. However, it is also a great destination for winter sports like skiing and snowboarding from December to March when it is covered in snow.
Khilanmarg has limited accommodation options. Most visitors prefer to stay in the hotels or resorts in Gulmarg and travel to Khilanmarg for a day visit. However, for those looking to stay closer to nature, there are a few huts and guesthouses available which need to be booked well in advance.
Tourists can engage in a variety of activities at Khilanmarg including trekking, horse riding, photography, skiing and snowboarding in winter, and simply enjoying the scenic beauty of the vast meadows and snow-capped peaks. The Apharwat Peak, close to Khilanmarg, is a popular spot for skiing enthusiasts.
Having a guide can be beneficial, especially for those unfamiliar with the area or those who are trekking during winter when the path may be covered with snow. Guides can provide valuable insights about the flora and fauna, make arrangements for pony rides, and ensure safety.
Visitors should dress in layers with a waterproof outer layer, carry sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, and wear comfortable trekking shoes. In winter, carry heavy woolens, gloves, and winter sports gear. It's advisable to also carry water, snacks, a basic first aid kit, and a camera to capture the breathtaking views.
