Historical Significance

The origins of Maheshwar date back to the ancient times of Mahishmati city mentioned in the epics and legends. However, the fort as we know it today gained prominence during the 18th century under the Holkar dynasty, particularly under the rule of the powerful Queen Ahilyabai Holkar. She took a particular interest in the development of the city and the fort, which became an important cultural and political center. Her reign was marked by prosperity and immense development to arts and crafts, which still thrives in Maheshwar.

The fort, with its life size-statue of Rani Ahilyabai, exquisitely carved windows and balconies, and the royal cenotaphs, has been a central draw for visitors. In addition, the town's serene ghats, where pilgrims perform rituals and take holy dips in the Narmada, add to the spiritual allure of this destination.
