Food History of Murmansk, Russia

Located in the northwest part of Russia, Murmansk is a port city that has been influenced by a variety of cultural food traditions due to its geographical position and historical connections. The regional cuisine reflects the harsh climate and the need for nourishing, hearty meals to withstand the long, cold winters. Given its proximity to the Arctic Ocean and the Barents Sea, Murmansk is particularly known for its seafood. Preserved foods, such as pickling and salting, have been essential for surviving the long winters when fresh produce is scarce.
