Nelong Valley, often referred to as the 'Ladakh of Uttarakhand,' is nestled in the Uttarkashi district, near the Indo-Tibetan border. Nelong Valley's high altitude and strategic location made it a crucial trade route between Tibet and India until the 1962 Indo-China war. Being a sensitive border area, it was then closed for civilians. Recently, however, the valley has been reopened for restricted tourism. To preserve its pristine ecosystem and regulate tourism, authorities have set stringent guidelines. Visitors can witness an intriguing array of flora and fauna adapted to the harsh climatic conditions, along with vestiges of the historical trade route including the wooden bridge at Gartang Gali and remnants of forts and dwellings. The valley provides a challenging landscape for adventure enthusiasts and an opportunity for wildlife photography lovers to capture the unique biodiversity of the region.
