History of Tourism in Pachmarhi

The history of tourism in Pachmarhi is closely connected with its discovery by British Officer Captain James Forsyth in 1857. Forsyth, belonging to the Bengal Lancers, stumbled upon this enchanting plateau while on a military expedition and marveled at its beauty. Recognizing its potential as a summer retreat, the British soon developed Pachmarhi into a hill station. It became a sanctuary from the heat of the Indian summers, particularly for military personnel and colonial officials.

Pachmarhi's colonial heritage is still apparent in its architecture, with many bungalows, churches, and buildings that date back to the British era. The Christ Church, built in 1875, is an enduring example of colonial architecture and remains a popular tourist destination for its historical and spiritual significance.

The establishment of the Pachmarhi Cantonment also contributed to the area's development and popularity. It served not only as a strategic military location but also as a base that helped to facilitate tourism.
