Type of destination: Historical Garden
Ideal visit duration: 1-2 hours
Ram Bagh, also known as Aram Bagh or Bagh-i-Gul Afshan, is one of the earliest Mughal gardens, located in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India. It is believed to have been laid out by Emperor Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire, in the Persian style in 1528. This garden is historically significant as it is said that Babur was temporarily interred here before being permanently laid to rest in Kabul, Afghanistan. Ram Bagh illustrates the typical Mughal charbagh pattern, with quadrilateral layout and pathways intersecting to divide the space into four equal parts, symbolizing the Persian concept of paradise. The garden is adorned with numerous fountains, terraces, pavilions, and lush greenery, making it a tranquil oasis. The Yamuna River running alongside enhances the beauty of the garden with its serene presence. Ram Bagh embodies grace and ancient architecture, representing a blend of Persian and Mughal aesthetic elements. It is a fine example of the synthesis of Persian garden layout with indigenous Indian architecture and technology.
