Type of destination: Monastery / Cultural Site
Tango Goemba, also known as Tango Monastery, is a Buddhist monastery located north of the capital city Thimphu in Bhutan. It is situated at the edge of a forested hillside near the end of Thimphu Valley and features stunning architecture typical of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries. Founded in the 13th century by Phajo Drugom Zhigpo, who introduced the Drukpa Kagyu lineage of Buddhism to Bhutan, Tango Goemba has been a center of learning and spiritual retreat. The Monastery's name, 'Tango', means 'horse head', which is inspired by the natural formation of a horse head in the rocks. The site has been developed and refurbished by various Buddhist masters over time, including the 4th Temporal Ruler of Bhutan, Tenzin Rabgye, in the 17th century. Tango Goemba is now an important university of Buddhist studies and the seat of the Drukpa Kagyu school of Buddhism. The trek to reach the monastery is quite steep and takes about an hour from the base. Visitors can explore its many halls, admire the intricate religious art, and enjoy breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and forest.
