Tango Buddhist Institute, also known as Tango Monastery, is a prominent Buddhist monastery located about 14 kilometers to the north of the Bhutanese capital, Thimphu. The institute, situated near Cheri Mountain, is an important center for higher learning and meditation for monks in Bhutan. Established in the 13th century, it has been a significant landmark in the country's religious and cultural landscape. The current structure dates back to the 15th century, when it was built by the 'Divine Madman,' Lama Drukpa Kunley. Known for its rich history, it stands on a site where it is believed that the 8th-century Buddhist saint Padmasambhava meditated. The monastery's architecture is traditionally Bhutanese, adorned with beautiful frescoes and intricate carvings. Tango is also the residence of the reincarnation of the 4th Desi, Gyalse Tenzin Rabgye, who is a highly respected figure in Bhutanese Buddhism. The journey to the monastery consists of a short hike, which provides visitors with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and a sense of tranquility.
