The Tango Goemba is less known for its culinary history than it is for its spiritual significance, as it is a Buddhist monastery located about 14 kilometers from Thimphu. Bhutanese cuisine has been influenced by its monastic life, where simple, hearty meals are common. The food usually consists of what can be grown locally and is heavily vegetarian, in accordance with Buddhist practices which emphasize compassion towards all living beings. However, in the wider Bhutanese cuisine, red rice, chili peppers, cheese, and a modest assortment of meats, excluding cow—which is considered sacred—are staples.
