Trashi Chho Dzong, also known as 'the fortress of the glorious religion', is an impressive monastery and fortress located in the northern part of Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. Positioned on the western bank of the Wang Chu River, it has been the seat of Bhutan's government since 1952. Trashi Chho Dzong is a fine example of Bhutanese architectural grandeur with its triple-tiered golden roofs, whitewashed walls, and intricate woodwork. This massive structure houses the throne room of His Majesty, the King of Bhutan, and various government offices. It is also the summer residence of the Je Khenpo, the Chief Abbot of Bhutan. The dzong hosts the popular annual Tsechu festival, drawing thousands of locals and tourists. The complex consists of a central utse (tower), numerous temples, administrative offices, and courtyards. The gardens and grounds surrounding the dzong are meticulously maintained, making it an exquisite place for both spirituality and governance. This iconic structure symbolizes the harmonious blend of tradition and governance unique to Bhutan's cultural landscape.
- You have to wait until 6pm before you can enter as the Dzong also served as govt offices during the day time.
- Do make sure your footwear is easily removable as many places require to remove shoes.
