National Memorial Chorten Tourism

National Memorial Chorten is one of the most prominent religious structures located in the heart of Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan. Established in 1974, the Chorten was built in memory of the third king of Bhutan, King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck, who is regarded as the father of modern Bhutan. It features a large white structure crowned with a golden spire and is adorned with richly painted annexes facing the cardinal directions. Each of these annexes contains statues and iconography of deities, with intricate mandalas and a central shrine dedicated to the late king. The Memorial Chorten is not just a monument of remembrance; it also serves as a place of daily worship for the local population, who can be seen circumambulating the Chorten throughout the day, spinning the prayer wheels and reciting mantras. It is a hub of devotion, particularly during religious festivals. The architecture of the Chorten is a stunning example of traditional Bhutanese style, complete with intricate paintings and carvings that depict various Buddhist teachings.
