Tungnath Temple, located in the mountainous Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India, is one of the highest Shiva temples in the world. Positioned at an altitude of around 3680 meters above sea level, it is the third temple of the Panch Kedar pilgrimage circuit, comprising five Shiva temples in the Himalayas. The temple is believed to be more than 1,000 years old and is steeply enriched with legends and lore, intertwined closely with the Hindu epic Mahabharata. Tungnath is accessible by a challenging but scenic trek of about 4 km commencing from Chopta, which is often referred to as the 'Mini Switzerland of India'. The temple architecture is ancient and made of stone, featuring a similar style to other mountain temples of the region, with wooden carvings and a tall tower. The tranquility and raw beauty of the surrounding landscapes offer a spiritually uplifting experience. The temple premises offer panoramic views of the majestic Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba.

Scintillating trek to Tunganath
Beautiful historical temple. The trek was fascinating, with mesmerizing views. Early climb is advisable. Attending Bhog ceremony at noon is refreshing. Better to climb down immediately before evening.
