Gauchar is a picturesque small town nestled in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. Located en route to the holy town of Badrinath, it is a significant stopover for pilgrims. It lies on the banks of the River Alaknanda, amidst lush greenery and panoramic views of the Himalayas. Gauchar is famous for its flat land, which is quite unusual in the hilly terrain of the region. This flat land stretches over a large area, making it one of the largest pieces of flatland in the mountains of Uttarakhand, hence also known as a 'Mini Plain'. Gauchar's airstrip has historical importance; it was used by the Indian Air Force during the Indo-China war in 1962. The town also hosts the famous Gauchar Mela, a trade fair that attracts tourists and locals. Essentially, Gauchar serves as a trade, cultural, and religious hub in the region, providing a serene and spiritual atmosphere enhanced by its moderate climate and natural beauty. The settlement is surrounded by terraced fields, traditional homes, and is known for its agricultural produce and medicinal plants.
