Roopkund Lake, surrounded by the majestic Himalayas, is situated at an elevation of about 5,029 meters in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, India. It's famously known as 'Mystery Lake' or 'Skeleton Lake' due to the hundreds of ancient human skeletons found at the bottom of the lake and around its edges. These remains are visible in the clear water of the shallow lake during a one-month period when the ice melts. Along with skeletons, Wooden artifacts, iron spearheads and leather slippers are also found which are preserved in the cold and dry atmosphere of the region. The trail to Roopkund passes through lush green grassy land and conifer forest, clings onto the steep slopes and goes deep into the gorgeous wilderness of the Himalayas. This glacial lake is a popular trekking destination because of its challenging routes, stunning natural vistas, and the intriguing mystery surrounding it. It requires a good level of physical fitness and acclimatization to altitude as the oxygen levels here are low.
