Historical Significance

The Ajmer Sharif Dargah, also known as the Dargah Sharif or the shrine of Sufi Saint Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, is one of the most significant and revered Sufi shrines in the world. Located in the heart of Ajmer in Rajasthan, India, this Islamic pilgrimage site has been a beacon of faith for millions of devotees for centuries. The shrine houses the saint's tomb and has been a site of pilgrimage since the saint's demise in 1236 AD.

Development as a Tourist Destination

Tourism at Ajmer Sharif Dargah gained momentum during the time of the Mughal Empire, especially under the reign of Emperor Akbar who used to undertake an annual pilgrimage to the Dargah from Agra. Over time, the popularity of the shrine grew immensely, attracting not just Sufi pilgrims but also tourists interested in the architectural and cultural heritage of the site.

The Dargah complex has been expanded and renovated multiple times over the centuries, each ruler adding their mark to its structure. This has led to an intricate architectural design that includes a massive gate donated by the Nizam of Hyderabad and a series of expansive courtyards.

The site is busiest during the annual Urs festival, which commemorates the death anniversary of Saint Moinuddin Chishti.
