Alfred Park (Chandra Shekhar Azad Park) (Allahabad (Prayagraj)) History

Welcome to Chandra Shekhar Azad Park: A Historical Jewel of Allahabad (Prayagraj)

Previously known as Alfred Park, Chandra Shekhar Azad Park holds a significant place in the historical and cultural landscape of Allahabad, now known as Prayagraj, in Uttar Pradesh, India. Established in 1870 to commemorate the visit of Prince Alfred to the city, the park sprawls over 133 acres and is one of the largest green spaces in the region.

A Glimpse into the Past

The park was originally named after Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh, and was a symbol of British authority in India. However, its lasting legacy is tightly bound to the Indian struggle for independence. Notably, it was here where the freedom fighter Chandra Shekhar Azad chose to make his final stand against the British police on 27th February 1931, eventually sacrificing his life for the freedom of India. In honor of his bravery, the park was later renamed post-India's independence.

With the rise of Indian patriotism and the increasing interest in the country's struggle for independence, Chandra Shekhar Azad Park has become an important stop for tourists visiting Allahabad. Visitors come to see the exact spot where Azad fought valiantly and to pay their respects at his memorial within the park grounds. Azad's presence has turned the park into a pilgrimage site for those wishing to connect with India's revolutionary history.
