Must-Try Foods In Bali (Indonesia) For Tourists 2026 - 2027

Food History of Bali, Indonesia

Balinese cuisine is a reflection of the island's unique culture and history, deeply influenced by Indonesian traditions and also by the culinary practices of nearby Java and the historical spice trade. Food in Bali has been shaped over time by natural resources available from the tropical environment and the island's Hindu heritage, which prescribes certain dietary restrictions, like the less common consumption of beef due to the Hindu respect for cows.

Rice is a staple in Balinese diets, grown in picturesque terraced fields and often accompanied by a variety of vegetables, spices, and meats. Seafood also plays a significant role in the diet, a result of the island's extensive coastline. Over time, Balinese cuisine has evolved to embrace local ingredients like lemongrass, galangal, and coconut. The island's vibrant food scene today is a harmonious blend of traditional Balinese dishes with influences from other Indonesian islands, Asia, and the West.
