Bhimbetka is an archaeological site in Madhya Pradesh, India that consists of a complex of rock shelters and caves recognized for their prehistoric rock paintings. It is situated in the Raisen District on the southern edge of the Vindhya hills. Bhimbetka reflects a long interaction between people and the landscape, as evidenced by the numerous paintings and artifacts found here.

Bhimbetka is primarily famous for its rock shelters and ancient cave paintings that date back to the Paleolithic era. The site has more than 750 rock shelters, and out of these, over 400 have paintings. The artwork depicts the life and times of the communities that lived here, with scenes of dancing, hunting, horse and elephant riders, animal fights, and daily household activities. The caves are an important glimpse into human history and have been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The rock paintings at Bhimbetka are estimated to date back as far as 30,000 years, with some paintings from the later historical period. Researchers suggest that the shelters were inhabited by humans for more than 100,000 years.
