Bimbisara Jail (Rajgir) History

History of Bimbisara Jail Tourism

Bimbisara Jail, located in the ancient city of Rajgir in the state of Bihar, India, is a site steeped in historical and religious significance. Its name is derived from the King Bimbisara of the Haryanka dynasty, who ruled the Magadha kingdom from 543 to 492 BCE. Bimbisara was an important figure in Indian history and a contemporary of Lord Buddha.

The jail is traditionally believed to be the place where King Bimbisara was imprisoned by his own son, Prince Ajatashatru. Motivated by the desire for power, Ajatashatru incarcerated his father here to ascend to the throne. Bimbisara was said to choose this site for his imprisonment as it allowed him to see Lord Buddha ascending the Gridhakuta Hill, also known as Vulture's Peak, for meditation.

Due to its association with Buddhist history and its proximity to other important sites like the Vulture's Peak and the Nalanda University ruins, Bimbisara Jail has become a site of pilgrimage, especially for Buddhists. Tourism in Rajgir and around Bimbisara Jail began to flourish as followers of Buddhism from around the world started to explore the historical lineage of their faith.
