Chhatris or Cenotaphs are an integral part of the heritage in Orchha, Madhya Pradesh, India. Situated on the banks of the Betwa River, these monuments are the royal tombs of the Maharajas of Orchha. Erected during the 16th and 17th centuries, they represent a mix of Mughal and Rajput architecture. The Chhatris are a set of 14 cenotaphs, each dedicated to a ruler of the Bundela dynasty. These grand memorials are constructed on elevated square platforms and are crowned with umbrella-like structures called chhatris, hence their name. They are adorned with intricate carvings and are some of the finest examples of Bundela art and architecture. These cenotaphs are not just historical marvels but also offer a picturesque view set against the backdrop of the tranquil Betwa River. Visitors can explore the serene grounds, take boat rides on the river, and enjoy the sight of these architectural beauties reflecting the regal past of Orchha.
