Gangotri is a small town centered around the Gangotri Temple, situated in Uttarakhand, India. It stands at an impressive altitude of 3,100 meters on the banks of the Bhagirathi River. This sacred spot marks the origin of the Ganges River, though technically, the river begins at Gaumukh, which is further upstream and accessed via a trek from Gangotri. The shrine of Gangotri is one of the four sites in the Chota Char Dham pilgrimage circuit. According to Hindu mythology, it is the place where King Bhagirath performed penance to bring the river Ganges down from the heavens. The temple is a simple yet magnificent structure composed of white marble that was built in the 18th century by a Gurkha commander. The river's holy waters are the life source for millions of Indians, who believe that bathing in the river can wash away their sins. The serene natural surroundings composed of rugged mountains and gently rustling forests complement the spiritual atmosphere of the pilgrimage site.
