Yamunotri, part of the Char Dham pilgrimage in Uttarakhand, India, is both a natural and spiritual wonder nestled in the majestic Himalayan range. At an altitude of 3,293 meters, it is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna and is the source of the Yamuna River, India’s second holiest river after the Ganges. The actual source, a frozen lake and glacier (Champasar Glacier), is located at a challenging trek away. Pilgrims typically worship at the Yamunotri Temple, where the river is represented by a silver idol. This sacred temple was built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century and has since been destroyed and reconstructed twice due to weather extremities. The hot springs at Janki Chatti are also a major highlight here, where visitors can enjoy a rejuvenating dip. The trek to Yamunotri is picturesque, with views of rugged peaks and dense forests. Pilgrims undertake this yatra for spiritual salvation, and the serene ambiance provides a perfect setting for meditation and introspection.
