How to Reach Hanoi

Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam, is well-connected and easily accessible from various parts of the world. Here are detailed guidelines to help you plan your journey:

By Air

Noi Bai International Airport (HAN) is the primary airport serving Hanoi, located approximately 35 kilometers from the city center. It is well served by numerous international and domestic airlines connecting Hanoi with major cities around the world.

To get to the city from the airport, you can opt for:

  • Taxi: Available outside the arrivals area. Make sure to use the official taxi queue or pre-book a taxi to avoid being overcharged.
  • Airport Shuttle: Many hotels offer their own shuttle service. Check with your hotel in advance.
  • Public Bus: Bus services such as No. 17, 90, or 86 connect the airport to the city center at a much lower cost than taxis.

By Train

Hanoi is a main railway station for Vietnam's railway network. Trains to Hanoi can be taken from different parts of the country including Ho Chi Minh City, Hue, and Da Nang. Information on schedules and ticketing can be found on Vietnam Railways’ official website.

By Bus

Long-distance buses from other cities and neighboring countries such as China, Laos, and Cambodia also arrive at one of several bus stations in Hanoi. These include Giap Bat, My Dinh, and Gia Lam among others.

By Road

If you are an adventurous traveler, you may opt for renting a car or motorcycle to reach Hanoi. However, traffic in Vietnam can be chaotic and it's important to be well-versed with the local driving habits and regulations.

By Water

Though less common, there are certain cruise liners that dock in Hai Phong, near Hanoi. From here, you can transfer to the city by bus or taxi.

Once in Hanoi, you can explore the city by:

  • Motorbike: This is a popular and flexible way to navigate the city. Motorbikes are available for rent but ensure you have a valid driver’s license.
  • Taxi or Ride-hailing Apps: Convenient for longer distances within the city.
  • Public Bus: An affordable and reliable mode of transport with extensive network coverage.
  • Cyclo and Xe Ôm: Traditional cycle rickshaws and motorcycle taxis for short distances.

Note: When using public transportation or taxis, it is advisable to have the address written in Vietnamese to show the driver, and always agree on a fare before the journey when using taxis or cyclos.

Happy Travels!
